Yes We Khan! Congratulations Sadiq

The early declarationa are sending some very mixed messages, perhaps suggesting that local factors and campaigning have made important differences.

Sadiq Khan's victory in Tooting, increasing Labour's share of the vote by 1% as turnout went out and holding a 3000 majority in what looked like a knife-edge contest, has certainly given Labour supporters a morale boost.

Rupert Murdoch may think David Cameron deserves the Obama mantle - but the great local effort which Sadiq's team ran under their "Yes We Khan" slogan certainly paid off.

I was in Tooting today: it was striking how many posters there were for "Re-elect Sadiq Khan", especially all over the high street.

The Fabians celebrate the re-election of our Chair to Parliament in a very hard fought contest. The result will disappoint the right-wing activist group Young Britons Foundation and the Tory Conservative Future, who were very active in the constituency in support of Conservative candidate Mark Clarke.

The result is the first of four declared "decapitation" attempts to fail.
