Tom Paine at The Globe

Courtesy of Stuart Weir at OurKingdom I read that The Globe Theatre in London is staging a production of Trevor Griffith's play about Tom Paine, A New World, running until October 9.

In Next Left's long-running exploration of democratic republicanism, few thinkers have cropped up more frequently in discussion than Paine.

Whether you're exercised by the need for a citizens' convention, putting an end to arbitrary state power, or fighting wealth inequality through inheritance tax and a citizens' inheritance, Paine was there first.

Assuming I can get tickets and work-out the baby-sitting, I look forward to a play that will not only be historically fascinating, but which, as Stuart Weir suggests, could well have enormous contemporary resonance.
